James S. Ward is a 1974 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law and is a member of the Alabama and Birmingham Bar Associations. He is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, and the United States District Court for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts.
Jim’s practice involves general civil litigation, representing health regulatory boards and licensees of both health and non-health regulatory boards and two (2) municipalities, Warrior and Adamsville. Jim is also Municipal Judge of Tarrant, another municipality in Jefferson County.
Jim currently represents the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy and the Alabama State Board of Prosthetists and Orthotists. He previously represented the Alabama State Board of Chiropractic Examiners and the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners. He is currently an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) for the State Health Planning Development Board and for many years served as an ALJ for the Alabama Medicaid Agency until the Agency was informed it could no longer utilize lawyers in private practice to serve as an ALJ. Jim in the past was hired by the Alabama State Board of Nursing to specially prosecute a case and in the past has served as a Hearing Officer for the Alabama State Board of Podiatry. Jim also served for many years as a Hearing Officer for one of the three disciplinary panels of the Alabama State Bar until he was term limited.
Jim has lectured extensively for the Federal Association of Regulatory Boards and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. Jim also has represented the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.
Jim was elected by his peers for a three (3) year term as a member of the Executive Committee of the Birmingham Bar Association and as Treasurer. Jim has also served as past President of the Birmingham Bar Association. He presently is Vice-Chairman and was past Chairman of the Alabama State Bar’s Client Security Fund Committee.
Jim is a fellow in the Alabama Law Foundation, which membership is made up on only one percent (1%) of lawyers in the State of Alabama and currently serves on the Board of Trustees.
Jim was one of the founders of the Exceptional Foundation located in Birmingham, Alabama and the first president of its Board. The Exceptional Foundation provides year-round services to individuals with special needs who have reached the age of 21 and no longer receive services from school systems. Programs are also offered to the school-age exceptional population through after-school activities and a summer camp. Daily programs include field trip outings, competitive sports teams and various social events. The overall daily goals of The Exceptional Foundation are to enhance the lives of its participants through a variety of activities and to provide a community for the mentally challenged population and their families. The Exceptional Foundation currently serves over 400 individuals in Greater Birmingham through its various programs throughout the year.

Mitchell’s Place provides comprehensive, researched-based, educational, social and therapeutic services for children, adolescents, and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities in a deeply caring environment.
